We registered. The candidates have filed their candidacy. Now we weigh our decisions.
Come May 2010, put yourself as HR officer. An individual who will scrutinize each candidate of who fits the posts.Be discerning, discriminating to a certain point in making that vote.
For the first time, I am glad that Filipinos today are talking about and asking people who to vote this time, compared to the past elections where most of the people I know are apathetic and care less for our country’s politics. I am grateful that people are discussing about a very big decision that as a country we will make.
But what saddens me is that we ask the wrong questions, or to be particular set the wrong criteria for choosing a leader. (This applies not only for president, local leaders included)
DISCLAIMER: This is my opinion. I didn’t write this to antagonize any candidate, or to propel anybody. This is my stand. You are free to agree or disagree. All I ask of you is to respect my points in the same way I respect yours. Okay Game?
SIX POINTS
I have here six points or questions that have been constantly circulating among the discussions I have had with friends and politically charged strangers. I even almost gone into a brawl for defending a point bwahahhahaa nonetheless here they are.
1. Will you vote for Noynoy Aquino? (A very popular question since he is leading the surveys)
My answer is, if elections are held today no. "He is the son of two democratic heroes" My friend rebutted.
So what if he is the son of our two heroes, I mean no offense meant to people who idolize and admire Cory's and Ninoy’s contribution to democracy. I am with you; I owe my freedom from these couple who fought hard to restore democracy. But, it doesn’t mean I owe them my freedom, I am indebted to them, I will not vote for Noynoy in order to pay Cory's and Ninoy’s contribution for our freedom. I will vote for him should in the coming elections he shapes up to be the leader I want to elect.
2. Yeah Noynoy isn’t that intelligent or capable, but what is the purpose of having advisers.
This is a sad statement. I really feel bad for people who think this way, it’s like okay fine I will marry this man anyways he has friends that can advise him how to run our relationship.
People, wake up! I personally do not need a president/leader that doesn’t have any sense of responsibility or is half-capable. I need someone man enough and competent. Sure advisers are there to give the best feasible advice for the president to make, but to think that we will settle for a not-so –capable leader since he will hire smart advisers is an act of mediocrity.
My point is I will not settle for less. I am going to vote this election for a leader who is capable of running this country. I will vote for Noynoy should I feel or see that he is man enough to run this country.
3. We need to vote for Unity. We are a divided nation. Only Noynoy can unite us. Noynoy is the Filipino Obama.
Cojito Ergo Sum “I think therefore I am.” A person who believes this country is a divided one thinks it is one; but sorry I don't share such a thought.
I believe that we are a united country, people can co exist in this country, we are united and we are as strong as our heroes who fought in numerous wars over our history. Today we can see people wearing patriotic shirts bearing three stars and a sun, or the Philippine archipelago. Not because it is a fashionable but rather a sense of love for our country.
Vote for unity, and that Noynoy will unite this nation. I am so sorry, But no. He even wasn’t capable of uniting the whole opposition how much more the country.
Sorry, correct me if I am wrong, I do not see the need to vote for unity. If there is any sense of disunity, or division, it is only amongst our leaders who constantly battle to outwit each other or to get the highest position or eat the biggest chunk of our taxes. But if you will observe the common Filipinos, the one in the countryside or the average earning urbanistas, then u will see we are united, we are happy, we do not feel divided. We are not America divided by race or culture. We Filipinos long ago accepted the diversity that our country has. We just fail to appreciate that.
If we see Noynoy as Obama, see where America is today after Obama got elected.
4. Will you vote for Manny Villar?
Maybe yes because by far he is the most capable candidate I know of. He was able to earn his way up from scratch and that is something/someone that the Philippines needed, an individual who can run a country. We are still in a financial crisis and we may not feel it but we need someone who can keep us afloat.
My worry about Villar is, first the C5 scandal, though he was able to clean his name and was judged not guilty, but the mere essence of a scandal may have spoken of something hidden from the common Filipino. Second his high huge campaign expenses, no intelligent man will invest in order not to gain profit. Someway sometime he will need to earn back what he has spent. Third and Final, the Willy Revillame thing, I do not need to expound on this.
5. How about Gibo Teodoro?
I like him, I like his aura. I like how he runs his campaign on capacity and intelligence. We need someone like him. An individual, who is intelligent enough to run a country, but the sad thing about Gibo is that, like Noynoy, he failed to earn the unity of the administration, many in the administration are jumping over fences; something that Gibo and the administration wasn’t capable of controlling of.
Second he still has to prove himself of how capable he is of running a country. I still haven’t seen how he performed as an executive. Being a department secretary isn’t enough.
Third, the GMA thing, I admire GMA for keeping the country afloat. The world is in crisis, but I haven’t felt it. Good management I guess, it’s just that many Filipinos, or maybe what is portrayed in the media, are dissatisfied. Oh well when will man be satisfied, we never get contented and I felt bad for not seeing the things done by the president. Try being one and let’s see if you can do it better.
But with GMA running for congress, this makes me eat all my admiration for her. Yes I admire her for intellectually and strategically keeping her post for years, something Men cannot hold off (ehem Erap), but sometimes she needs to learn when to stop. The hunger for power is something I cannot tolerate. If Gibo can condemn the president’s decision to run, then I will vote for him, Campaign even, but I doubt this. Nobody in their proper mind will bite the hands that feed them.
6. So what are my criteria for picking the next leader?
I only have one criterion that is the Capacity to run the office.
For once we should vote for someone who is credible of running a country. We need to vote someone who can manage our resources and keep this country running. We are in crisis, we have the security threat in Mindanao, and we need to stop all this insurgencies and terrorist attack that threatens our security. My god, people/I want to go to Jolo, I heard there is a Pink Sand Beach down there, don’t you guys want to try it?!
Second we have so many people who are in hunger and poverty, we need someone who can help them, not through dole outs, but more on giving this people means to alleviate their lives so that they can secure themselves and be sustainable. Don’t give them fish teach them how to fish.
Third and final we need someone who can invest in our youth, improve our education system, and empower skills training. These are the things that can fuel our economy and improve the life of Juan de la Cruz. I am blessed to finish college, but something in me says that my degree doesn’t fit the current need of the economy. There is a big mismatch. Are you a registered nurse working as a call center agent? LOL I am so glad I didn’t went to nursing. Peace nurse friends of mine.
So what's your take?
